In 2024, the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry has once again exceeded expectations, with final figures revealing global installations of 574 GW, marking the most substantial annual growth in the sector’s history. This impressive expansion translates into the addition of over 9 million new PV systems worldwide - demonstrating the accelerating pace of solar adoption across residential, commercial, and utility-scale applications. With this surge, the cumulative number of PV systems worldwide continues its climb into the tens of millions, on track to surpass 100 million systems globally before 2030.

Construction and connection of new solar PV capacity continues at record pace, with 9 million installations in 2024.

Looking back, the solar PV industry experienced rapid growth in 2023 as well, installing 444 GW of capacity—well above the initial projections of 350 GW. This followed a strong performance in 2022, which saw 268 GWp installed, a significant jump from 180 GWp in 2021. Each successive year highlights a clear trend: the world is rapidly accelerating its transition to solar energy, supported by falling technology costs, growing policy support, and increasing demand for clean electricity.

Looking forward, the solar PV industry shows no signs of slowing down. Global investments, innovations in PV system technologies, and expanded manufacturing capacity are expected to drive further growth in 2025 and beyond. As the energy transition intensifies, solar PV remains at the forefront - delivering scalable, cost-effective, and climate-resilient energy solutions worldwide. In 2025, an anticipated installation of 698 MW according to Bloomberg NEF further underscores the ongoing growth and investment in solar PV deployment. This would bring online an additional quantity of over 11 million grid-connected PV systems.
