Solar PV capacity in Poland nearing 12 GWp

Updated: May 18, 2023

The solar PV market of Poland had reached 10.2 GWp (Gigawatt-peak) of installed capacity by May 2022, continuing its tremendous growth rate and already increasing 33% from last year's Q4 figure of 7.67 GWp. By the end of 2022, the Polish solar market is due to reach 12 GWp - implying a 56% year over year growth. Previously, from Q4 2020 to Q4 2021, it grew by record 94% within a single year - from 3.96 GWp to 7.67 GWp.

The growth is across all sub-segments of the solar industry from residential and commercial to industrial and to lesser degree utility scale. Residential sub-segment was accounted for 2 GWp out of the 2021 deployed capacity - more than one half, or some two hundred thousand installations. Industrial sub-segment was also notorious for its fast pace of growth with multiple 1-10 MWp solar facilities.

Notably, Poland is becoming a key player in the European Union in terms of new PV installations. The total installed PV capacity in the EU amounted to 158 GWp at the end of 2021, with 7.67 GWp installed in Poland (4.8% of total). However, in terms of newly added capacity, the Polish market was quite dominant - deploying as much as 2.71 GWp (12.7% of new additions) out of 21.4 GWp in the EU. Poland was hence at the second place behind Germany in terms of installed PV capacity growth across the EU.

According to the Polish Instytut Energetyki Odnawialnej (IEO) 2021 report, Poland had been expected to reach 10 GW capacity by the end of 2022 and a 30 GWp capacity by 2030, but it seems that the country is already going well ahead of the 2022 target. The updated 2022 estimate by the IEO sets 2022 to end with 12 GWp solar PV capacity across Poland.

Such a significant scale-up requires massive digitalization of distributed solar planning, construction, financing and O&M service management as well as significant regulation easing. Managing thousands of distributed solar installations requires novel approaches and technologies to keep up with the astounding pace of solar PV development.
